Omaha, NWS Climate Summary for Lincoln,
NebraskaLINCOLN YEARLY CLIMATE SUMMARY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OMAHA/VALLEY NE 436 PM CST TUE JAN 1 2008 ...2008 YEARLY SUMMARY FOR LINCOLN... ON THE WHOLE...2007 WAS A WARM AND WET YEAR IN LINCOLN. HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED A COLD FEBRUARY...A FICKLE MARCH WITH BOTH A BLIZZARD AND UNSEASONABLE WARMTH...A DAMAGING EARLY APRIL FREEZE...A VERY WET MAY FOLLOWED BY A DRY JUNE AND JULY...A HOT AND MOIST AUGUST WITH STRONG THUNDERSTORM WINDS...A MILD FALL...A VERY DRY NOVEMBER...AND A COLD AND WET DECEMBER. JANUARY WAS A FAIRLY NORMAL WINTER MONTH. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 23.6 DEGREES...1.2 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. A MILD LOW OF 36 ON THE 4TH TIED A DAILY RECORD ESTABLISHED JUST LAST YEAR. ON THE OTHER HAND...A LOW OF 15 BELOW ON THE 16TH WAS NOT A RECORD...BUT IT WAS THE COLDEST TEMPERATURE IN TWO YEARS. PRECIPITATION WAS MOSTLY IN THE FORM OF SNOW...WITH 10.0 INCHES DURING THE MONTH. FEBRUARY WAS COLD. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 23.9 DEGREES WAS 4.4 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL...AND THE COLDEST SINCE 2001. THE COLD WEATHER ENDED ON THE 16TH. BY THEN...THERE HAD BEEN 6 DAYS WITH LOWS OF ZERO OR COLDER...THE MOST IN FEBRUARY SINCE 1994 PRODUCED 7 DAYS. PRECIPITATION TOTALLED 1.31 INCHES...ABOUT DOUBLE THE NORMAL 0.66 INCH. MUCH OF THIS CAME ON THE 24TH...WITH A DAILY RECORD OF 0.82 INCH. THE OLD RECORD WAS 0.75 INCH IN 2001. SNOWFALL WAS FREQUENT BUT LIGHT...WITH A NEAR NORMAL MONTHLY TOTAL OF 6.4 INCHES. MARCH WAS A WET MONTH WITH HIGHLY VARIABLE TEMPERATURES. IT BEGAN WITH A HOWLING BLIZZARD THAT PRODUCED 7.1 INCHES OF SNOW...MOST OF IT ON THE 1ST...AND WINDS GUSTING TO 44 MPH. WINDS DID NOT SUBSIDE UNTIL THE 3RD AND CAUSED EXTENSIVE BLOWING AND DRIFTING. TEMPERATURES THEN SOARED. A HIGH OF 80 ON THE 13TH EASILY BROKE THE PREVIOUS DAILY RECORD OF 75 IN 1957. LATE IN THE MONTH IT WAS WARM AND WET. A RECORD STRING OF 7 CONSECUTIVE MARCH DAYS HAD LOWS OF 50 OR WARMER...COMPARED TO THE PREVIOUS STRING OF 4 IN 1939. MILD LOWS TIED A DAILY RECORD OF 55 ON THE 28TH AND MADE A NEW RECORD OF 60 ON THE 29TH. THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE WAS 48.0 DEGREES...8.6 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS WAS THE THIRD WARMEST MARCH AFTER 1946 AND 1910. THE UNUSUALLY WARM WEATHER ENDED ON APRIL 2...SETTING THE STAGE FOR A SEVERE AND PROLONGED SPRING FREEZE. FROM THE 4TH THROUGH THE 9TH...EACH NIGHT WAS WELL BELOW FREEZING...OFTEN WITH A BITING NORTH WIND. TEMPERATURES BOTTOMED OUT WITH A RECORD LOW OF 17 ON THE 8TH...WELL BELOW THE PREVIOUS DAILY RECORD OF 22 IN 1928. EARLY SPRING VEGETATION HAD BEEN WELL ADVANCED. NEARLY EVERYTHING GREEN WAS FROZEN...ALONG WITH EARLY FLOWERS AND FRUITING TREES. FOLLOWING THE FREEZE...TEMPERATURES REBOUNDED TO WELL ABOVE NORMAL. HOWEVER...THE AVERAGE MONTHLY TEMPERATURE OF 50.3 WAS STILL 0.9 DEGREE BELOW NORMAL. RAINFALL WAS SPOTTY UNTIL LATE APRIL...THEN CAME ON STRONG. THE MONTHLY TOTAL OF 3.44 INCHES WAS 0.54 INCH ABOVE NORMAL. MUCH OF THIS WAS DUE TO THUNDERSTORMS AND HEAVY RAIN ON THE 24TH...WITH A DAILY RAINFALL OF 2.60 INCHES. THIS IS THE MOST FOR ANY DAY IN APRIL...EXCEEDING THE 2.34 INCHES THAT FELL ON APRIL 28 1974. MAY CONTINUED THE WET AND WARM CONDITIONS OF LATE APRIL. MONTHLY RAINFALL WAS 8.13 INCHES...3.90 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. THIS WAS THE WETTEST SINCE 2001 AND THE 8TH WETTEST MAY OVERALL. A DAILY RECORD 3.35 INCHES FELL ON THE 5TH. THIS WAS SECOND ONLY TO THE 3.80 INCHES THAT FELL ON MAY 22 1965 FOR MAY RAINFALL. JUNE AND JULY TURNED DRY...BUT THE EXCESS MOISTURE FROM THE SPRING HELPED TO PREVENT A DROUGHT. JUNE RAINFALL OF 2.28 INCHES WAS 1.23 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. TEMPERATURES WERE NEAR NORMAL. A STRONG STORM SYSTEM IN THE NORTHERN PLAINS CAUSED STRAIGHT LINE WINDS GUSTING UP TO 56 MPH FROM THE SOUTH ON THE JUNE 6TH. JULY WAS DRIER THAN JUNE. RAINFALL TOTALLED JUST 1.22 INCHES...2.32 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THE TWO MONTH TOTAL WAS 3.50 INCHS...JUST UNDER HALF OF NORMAL...AND THE 8TH DRIEST ON RECORD FOR THE PERIOD. JULY TEMPERATURES TURNED HOT... WITH HIGHS OF 100 ON THE 7TH AND 18TH. MORNING LOWS DID NOT DROP BELOW 69 FROM THE 17TH TO THE END OF THE MONTH. AUGUST WAS HOT AND WET WITH HIGH HUMIDITY. THE HUMIDITY RESULTED IN A STRING OF 23 NIGHTS WITH TEMPERATURES NO COOLER THAN THE UPPER 60S...EXCEEDING A STRING OF 19 IN AUGUST 1983. IN FACT...COUNTING LATE JULY...THE STRING LASTED 38 DAYS. THIS WAS MUCH LONGER THAN THE PREVIOUS STRING OF 27 CONSECUTIVE DAYS WITH LOWS ABOVE 65 IN 1935. THE AUGUST AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 79.5 DEGREES...A LITTLE ABOVE JULY AND 4.1 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. RAINFALL WAS FREQUENT DURING THE MONTH...ERASING ANY MOISTURE DEFICIT. THE MONTHLY TOTAL OF 5.80 INCHES WAS 2.45 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. STRONG THUNDERSTORMS CAUSED WIND DAMAGE AS THEY SWEPT THROUGH THE AREA ON THE EVENING OF THE 20TH. A WIND GUST OF 82 MPH WAS RECORDED AT THE AIRPORT. THIS WAS THE STRONGEST SINCE A GUEST TO 83 MPH IN MAY 1996. WARMER AND WETTER CONDITIONS THAN NORMAL CONTINUED THROUGH SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER. SEPTEMBER RAINFALL OF 3.10 INCHES WAS 0.18 INCH ABOVE NORMAL. HOWEVER...ALL OF THIS CAME ON JUST SIX DAYS...LEAVING AN ABUNDANCE OF DRY AND PLEASANT WEATHER FOR THE MONTH. THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF 67.1 DEGREES WAS 1.1 DEGREE ABOVE NORMAL. OCTOBER RAINFALL AND THUNDERSTORMS WERE FREQUENT THROUGH THE 18TH...BUT THE REST OF THE MONTH WAS DRY AND COOLER. THE RAINFALL TOTAL OF 4.50 INCHES WAS 2.56 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. WARM AND HUMID WEATHER EARLY IN THE MONTH PRODUCED A DAILY RECORD TYING LOW OF 72 ON THE 6TH. THE FIRST FREEZING TEMPERATURE OF AUTUMN CAME ON THE 23RD...17 DAYS LATER THAN THE RECENT AVERAGE. THE OCTOBER AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 57.4...3.9 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. NOVEMBER ALSO HAD ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES...BUT WAS VERY DRY WITH ONLY 0.05 INCH OF PRECIPITATION. THIS WAS 1.53 INCHES BELOW NORMAL. THERE WERE 30 CONSECUTIVE DAYS WITHOUT MEASURABLE PRECIPITATION FROM OCTOBER 19TH THROUGH NOVEMBER 17TH. SNOWFALL WAS A SCANT 0.4 INCH ON THE 21ST. THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 39.5 DEGREES...1.4 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL. A HIGH OF 78 ON THE 18TH BROKE THE OLD DAILY RECORD OF 73 IN 1949. IT WAS THE LATEST IN THE SEASON FOR SUCH A WARM TEMPERATURE TO BE RECORDED. DECEMBER WAS COLD AND MOIST. THE MONTHLY AVERAGE TEMPERATURE WAS 24.3 DEGREES...2.2 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. TEMPERATURES STAYED WITHIN A FAIRLY NARROW RANGE FOR MOST OF THE MONTH...AND THERE WERE NO RECORDS. THE MONTHLY PRECIPITATION TOTAL WAS 2.09 INCHES...1.23 INCHES ABOVE NORMAL. SNOW WAS FREQUENT...AND FREEZING RAIN FELL ON THE 1ST...8TH...10TH...AND 11TH. MONTHLY SNOWFALL OF 8.9 INCHES WAS NOT EXCESSIVE...JUST PERSISTENT. 2007 STATISTICS TEMPERATURE PRECIPITATION MONTH AVG.
